WARNING! “Ransomware” Scam DON’T PAY THIS!

April 15, 2013

Do not pay this …this is not from An Garda Síochána…THIS IS A SCAM!

Has your computer been rendered inacessible, with the screen displaying a message purporting to be from An Garda Síochána, asking you to pay a fee for unlocking?

ISPAI’s Hotline.ie Service has over the past few weeks been receiving an average of 2-3 calls a day from victims of this illegal activity. We would like to again warn the public to be wary and not to pay over any money – it will not unlock your computer! Gardaí advise those whose have fallen prey to this scam and paid the ‘fine’ to report this to them as soon as possible. (See full Garda advice at www.garda.ie).

If your computer locks and displays image (or similar) proporting to be from An Garda Síochána, you need to clean this virus off your computer. If you don’t know how we advise you to consult an I.T. Professional or bring it to a computer repair shop.

DO NOT PAY THE FEE as this will not unlock your system, the malware will remain and you will have been defrauded by the perpetrators and their “ransomware”! Fraudsters are using this scam across Europe, locking computers with a virus and deceiving users into parting with their money, believing that they are being fined by their national police force.

The Hotline.ie Service provides an anonymous facility for the public to report suspected illegal content encountered on the Internet, in a secure and confidential way.
