New EU regualtions, which if passed will be immediately imposed across all 28 member states, are designed to improve and streamline the system to ensure that consumers are protected from unsafe physical products turning up on store shelves. A very worthy objective.
However, recent amendments have been tabled at the committee stage to make these rules apply to online services. The tentacles of intellectual property rights-holders’ are now reaching unforeseen areas – product safety and market surveillance – with grave implications for the online rights of citizens.
To raise alarm bells of the dangers to online services, ISPAI has written to the Irish MEP on the IMCO committee, warning of the implications for eCommerce principles and how these measures would throttle digital innovation and the online business we want to develop in Ireland.
